2016 • Year in Review

To say "what a year" would be a very immense understatement.  The past month has been a whirlwind of stress, heartache, sorrow, and a bit of rejoicing.  On the 22nd of December, at about 2:30 AM, my father was taken to the hospital via ambulance, and would spend 16 days in the ICU as the sickest patient on the floor.  On January 6th, the day after my parents' 46th wedding anniversary, my dad passed away and went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family and friends.  It was a long journey, but we never expected him to go so soon.  Much heartache and sorrowing has occurred, and will continue to occur, but we are rejoicing over the fact that he is in heaven and is pain-free, never to have another sorrow or pain.  Praise the Lord for that.

It has been such a short amount of time since it happened, and has been so incredibly busy and stressful that my mom and I really haven't had a chance for the truth of the situation to actually sink in yet.  It will soon though, I suppose, and that will not be an easy time.  In the mean time, we have enjoyed having family around us almost constantly, which has been such a huge blessing.  It has been a time of unification and closeness with my siblings, and that has been wonderful.  But nothing can or ever will fill the void that is so suddenly evident.

My dad worked from home for the past 30 years, up until he retired 3 years ago, and hence was always home (practically speaking).  My siblings and I were homeschooled, so those two facts combined made for a parent-child relationship like no other.  We were such a close family, and in the past years since my siblings left home, my parents and I were such a threesome, that it is going to be an unbelievable adjustment for Mom and I to suddenly find ourselves as a twosome.  God is so good and gives just the right amount of grace as we need it, but it is still an incredibly hard thing to realize and accept.

I'm so thankful that the Lord gave me the best dad I could ever imagine.  He was loving, supportive, thoughtful, encouraging, taught me how to work, how to write, and pretty much everything that I know.  I love him so much, and always will.  And I'm going to miss him so very much!!  <3  I love you, Dad!!!  I'll see you again someday.

(July 2016)

The rest of this post was written in early December, and I'll leave it as-is.

This year brought about the opening of a vintage shop, going to our first Civil War reenactment with Sarah (and all three of us winning awards for our outfits!), multiple weddings and bridal showers to work in/photograph, learning how to quilt, taking a couple of custom orders in my Etsy shop on top of good sales there this year, plus seeing the Lord work in marvelous ways in so many people's lives, including my own.  In short, the Lord is so good.  :)

Now on the blogging side of things; it seemed like I hadn't made very many things, and especially had not blogged about very many, but I was happily surprised when compiling my usual collage!  There are quite a few of them there!  The photos in the collage are of projects that I blogged about in 2016 (except for the last picture in row #3; that was a custom order in my Etsy shop).  All but 2 of them were made in 2016.  Shown in the collage are my mom's and Sarah's Civil War dresses; I did about 85% of the sewing on my mom's dress, and Sarah's was a joint effort between the three of us, so I went ahead and cobbed that for my picture too.  ;)

     first row: 1  2  3  4  5  6
second row: 1  2  3  4  5  6
    third row: 1  2  3  4  5  6
  fourth row: 1  2  3  4  5  6

Not shown in the collage are some aprons, baby and little girl's dresses, and 1860s undergarments
On top of all of these projects, I also made 7 dresses, 10 blouses, and 4 skirts that have not yet been photographed and/or blogged about, as well as 2 quilts, more UFOs than I would like to admit, and some other smaller projects.  So I guess it was quite a productive year after all!!  :)

My mom sewed up a storm last year as well, but there is a sad lack of evidence thereof on my blog.  We are terrible about getting pictures of her outfits, so she doesn't appear on here as often as she should.  We'll have to remedy that in the coming year!!  :)

     first row:  1  2  3
second row:  1  2  3
    third row:  1  2  3

On top of these outfits, she made 7 dresses, 6 blouses, a quilt, aprons, various 1860s underpinnings, a few UFOs (she has a whole lot more perseverance than I, haha), as well as other random projects.

So all in all, it was a great year sewing-wise, and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next year.  There are already plenty of sewing plans in the works, and fabrics in the stash that are just *begging* to be made into just the right things, so there will be no lack of sewing around here.  ;)

Lastly, thank you all for your wonderful support and sweet comments on here!  You don't know what an encouragement and delight you all are!!  I look forward to another year of blogging, Lord willing!  It is so much fun, and I hope that it provides some good inspiration for all of you, and especially those who are learning to sew their own clothing.  My whole mission in having this blog has always been to encourage those who are new in the realm to see that they too can sew anything their heart desires, with a little time, a little fabric, and a little patience.  :)

And moreover, I appreciate your prayers and thoughts for my mom and I as we begin this perilous journey without our husband/dad.  It's a new experience, and not an enjoyable one, but we are of course so thankful to have each other.  We're a team, we have an amazing family, and we have the Lord, so I know we can get through this.

<3  Thanks for stopping by, folks.

• Outtakes •

Sarah and I had the idea of posting some so-called "outtakes" on my blog, so here goes.

I must admit, the amount of them that exists from every single photoshoot is rather alarming, but........it just goes to show you that we are all human.  It's just that some of us are a little more human than others.  ;)

Being rather jealous of my mom's pockets, I had to envision what it would be like if I had them in my own skirt.

(outfits not posted as yet)

Something went wrong with that pose!  ;)

Here, it would seem we have an aged queen emerging from her carriage, being assisted by the hand of a servant.

Sarah decided to punish herself a bit by pulling her own hair.....  :)

....and later indulged in a native dance, otherwise known as mosquito swatting.

Mom and I doing our rendition of "The Haircuts."  If you have not yet watched Sid Caesar's skit of a 1950s singing group, you simply must do so!!  :)  I guarantee you'll split a gut!!

Extreme......frustration?????

Walking the runway, otherwise known as our back sidewalk.

Sarah had a fancy to jump from a tree in her full 1860s gear.  The results, as you will see, were quite good.  :)

And speaking of 1860s, some of us like the idea of making our heads look just like acorns.

Brown fuzzy bear jackets = height of vintage fashion.  Or not.
But what else would a girl wear when taking photographs in January?  ;)

What's happening here, I really don't know.  But it makes for an amusing photograph.  :P

Just, you know, twirling.  :)

:)

Thankfully, I wasn't actually falling off the wall, but it seemed too good of a photo opportunity to miss out on.

Twirling in a half-circle cape and skirt produces some interesting results.

Hope you enjoyed these goofy snapshots, or at least got a good chuckle out of them!!  :)  Have a wonderful week, and thanks for stopping by!!

• 2015 in Retrospect •

I hope you all had a blessed Christmas! We had a fun time of relaxation, baking and making (way too many) cookies and sweets, watching movies, and playing games.

I made gingerbread cookies for the first time ever, and loved them! I used Lily's recipe and found it to be easy to make and very tasty.

I also made my traditional Christmas-time toffee! I was thrilled that it turned out good this year!

My dad has been making fudge for...well...longer than I've been alive, I think. So it's a definite tradition in this family to always have Dad's fresh black walnut fudge at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is just about the most delicious thing you'll ever taste. :)

And lastly, we made our traditional Christmas sugar cookies!
The recipe originally came from my great-grandma, and it is a keeper! We made....only about 150 cookies. Just a few. ;)
They freeze very well, so they're fun to pull out throughout the year and enjoy.

~

Meanwhile, it's time to look back at 2015! It's hard to believe another year has gone by already!
It's been a good year overall; when trials come, you feel like it's been the one of the longest and worst years ever, and you're ready for next year to be a very good one (which is still always nice thought!). But once the trials are over, you realize that there was a purpose in them, and that they were actually for your benefit and learning.

But it's been especially good on the seamstress-y side of things!
I made quite a few garments, while of course at the same time making plenty of messes, plenty of mistakes, plenty of UFOs, but also plenty of memories. The Lord has been very bountiful! :)

To celebrate the new year, my Etsy shop is on sale through January 1st! Use coupon code WELCOME2016 to receive 16% off your purchase.

May you all have a Happy New Year! I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for the coming year.

• Life of Late •

Life has been crazy for the last couple of weeks, hence the un-announced break from blogging! The main reason was that my sister was in the hospital, quite literally at death's door. She has and did have very bad lung problems, with one lung being completely dead, and the remaining lung being very badly infected. Her prognosis was not good, but thanks to God, she has made a full recovery. Praise the Lord for miracles!! She went from being in ICU on a ventilator to being at home on an oxygen bottle in just a week or so, with the infection being completely cleared up.

In any case, the stress of that situation had us all in very unproductive moods, so I haven't exactly sewn up a storm! Needless to say, our 18th century outfits went on the back burner, and will have to be resumed after Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, we're busy with cleaning the house and getting ready for Thanksgiving and company, which means I'll get to see my new little niece again! (She's the one who the gifts were for).

 In the mean time, here's a few pictures of what has been happening around here;

Snow. SNOW!!!!!!!

I absolutely love winter, so the 6 inches or so that we got made me exceedingly happy. And the way it coated the trees made me even happier. :) I like snow.
No, actually I love snow.

I did manage to sew a couple of baby projects last week! Shocking!
The first one was this adorable blue dress, made from a 1940s pattern. Believe it or not, I wanted this fabric for a dress for myself SO bad, until I realized that it had tiny baby rattles all over it. Then I was glad I hadn't bought it. ;)
It makes for the cutest little dress though, don't you think? It's a size 2, and I only lengthened it...you know....six inches. Hardly any.

The other was this adorable (wait, I already said that!) really cute yellow dress! It is the epitome of girliness; I just love it! It is made of leftover fabric from my yellow 1940s dress, and the fun part is, I still have enough left for a bonnet or diaper cover! :)
Once again, I lengthened this dress something like six inches. I don't know why people thought little girls had to wear dresses that barely covered their cute little diapers! Goodness!
As with all of the little dresses I make, I just serge the hem edge so that one day when I have said munchkins (Lord willing!), I can hem them to the necessary length.

I just love making little clothes! And yes, just in case you were wondering, I AM going to make little boys' clothes. Eventually.
I just keep being drawn towards these fluffy little dresses.
Ahem!
Must think overalls!

I'll be back next week (hopefully!) with a real post! In the mean time, have a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving!

• A Peek into the Past •

I was looking at the HSM page yesterday, and noticed that next month's challenge is Heirlooms and Heritage. Inspired, I decided to finally take a dig into some of our old pictures for inspiration!
These are pictures from my mom's side of the family; we don't have many pictures from my dad's side of the family from way back. I'll have to ask my Grandma for some! :)

This is my great-grandma Cecilia, who died when I was about 2 years old. She was born in 1905, so she was probably 3 or 4 in this picture.
(Notice the deep hem on her dress!)

This is my other great-grandparents on their wedding day in 1914. Anton was born in 1889 and Clara was born in 1896. They both died before I was born.
Isn't her dress amazing?!! It's so wonderfully fluffy and intricate.

This is my grandma, who was born in 1925. This picture has no date, but it looks suspiciously like a graduation picture, making the date around 1943.
This is definitely my favorite picture of her; look at that hair!

My grandma and grandpa on their wedding day in September of 1945. They wore matching suits (rather than a dress on my grandma), no doubt because of the shortages due to the war.

Grandpa and Grandma owned a photo studio for years, so we have quite a few photos of them and their family from over the years, and they're very good quality.

Here they are with my aunt in late 1946. Notice they are wearing their wedding suits again!

Christmas, 1946.

Four generations! The lovely lady on the right was my grandma's sister.
(There's Grandma's wedding suit again.)

And now for cuteness overload.
My mom! Wasn't she the cutest little girl EVER?
Yep, she was.
And I happen to have a vintage pattern for a little girl dress that looks exactly like this. I can't wait to make one! :)

My grandma (far right) with her parents and siblings in the mid-late 1950s. Isn't my grandma's dress lovely? I see a petticoat! And I just >love< great-grandma's shoes!

And lastly, here is the same set of great-grandparents standing in front of their house in the late 1950s.
Great-grandpa died just four months after their 60th wedding anniversary in 1974.

~

I hope you enjoyed these pictures! I just love looking at old photographs, even when they're not of my own family. There's so much to look at!
And after studying these pictures for a while, I think I know what I'll be making for next month's HSM! I won't entirely give my plan away, but it has something to do with a suit.... ;)

• I've Opened an Etsy Shop! •

I did it!! I finally opened an Etsy shop! I've been pondering the idea for quite a while now, but it has finally come into fruition!

The garments that are for sale are ones that either don't fit or just aren't my style. Rather than having them sit around in my closet, I want to pass them on to someone who appreciates them!

     SOLD                SOLD

There are several other items for sale in the shop also, including a dress! I'll be adding a number of sewing patterns later in the week as well. Stop by the shop and check it out! Save 10% off everything through the end of the month with the coupon code, WELCOME1.

• The Profoundly Loved Blog Party •

A few weeks back, lovely Jessica of Chronically Vintage nominated me to take part in the Profoundly Loved Blog Party! It has taken a little bit of time to get around to writing this post, but it has been quite thought-provoking and fun to answer the questions!

1. Tell me about something you love and why?
Photography! Although I don't do it that much, and I am by no means an expert on the subject, I deeply enjoy taking pictures, whether it be flowers, people, scenery or sewing projects!

2. What is one thing you do that makes you feel like "I could do this forever"?
I'm going to give a very predictable answer to this question; sewing!! It is one of my very favorite things to do. There's just nothing like creating a garment to your exact preferences! I am so thankful for my amazing mom who taught me how!

3. What do you love about yourself?
I'm not much of one to talk about my positive attributes, but since you're asking, I love that I am a giving person. I enjoy giving things to people, whether it is something I have made or just a gift. It makes me happy to do things for others, and it's always rewarding to see how much they enjoy receiving them!

4. What advice would you give to someone who doesn’t believe he/she is beautiful?
I struggled with this for a long time, but finally was able to overcome it through realizing that beauty is not just looking like "everyone else." There is an unspoken law in this world that defines beauty as looking like "every" other person your age. That's not the truth at all! The only definition of beauty that I would give you is having a clean, pure heart. Psalm 45 says "The king's daughter is all glorious within." As far as outward looks go, God made you and I the way we look. He was content to make us the way we are; we are beautiful in His sight, and so we should be in our own sight! Be confident, find "your style," and you will realize just how beautiful you really are.

5. What is the best piece of advice you've ever received about confidence?
A few years back, I was struggling with decisions in my life, and I happened to be reading through the book of Psalm at the time. I came across Psalm 27:14, which says, "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord." That gave me such confidence to trust in God and to follow the way that I felt He was leading me. That is one of my favorite verses!

6. If you were your own daughter/son, what important things would you tell yourself/them?

Learn how to play an instrument!! I am so thankful that my parents had me take piano lessons; I have never regretted it for a moment! There were a few hurdles at first, but I soon learned to love playing. I wish I had learned to play more instruments when I was younger!

7. A verse, poem, sonnet, ancient-old proverb that inspires you to love yourself and others?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
